The town wasn't always called Erwin. It started out named Duke, after the wealthy Duke family of Durham, who built a cotton mill on the banks of the Cape Fear River starting around 1902. William A. Erwin managed the operation for the Dukes, and the mill was up and running by 1904, complete with a company-built town around it, houses, churches, a hospital, even its own icehouse and railroad. In 1926, once Trinity College in Durham became Duke University, the town changed its name to Erwin to avoid confusion. The mill kept running for most of the 20th century before finally closing in 2000, and the old railroad right-of-way through town is now a greenway.

That mill-town layout still shapes Erwin today. Whole blocks of company-built homes went up fast in the early 1900s and 1920s, all plumbed to the standards of their era, which is to say, not the standards you'd want running your household now.
