Dunn is the biggest town in Harnett County, and it still feels like the railroad runs right through the middle of everything, because it does. The town actually started life under a different name entirely. Railroad builders in the mid-1800s called the settlement Lucknow, after a siege in India, of all things. When the line from Wilson to Fayetteville came through and was finished in 1886, the community was renamed Dunn in 1873 to honor Bennett R. Dunn, the engineer who oversaw the railroad's construction. The town incorporated in 1887 as a logging and turpentine center, tapping the region's longleaf pines, and it grew fast from there into a hub for cotton, tobacco, and manufacturing. It's also the birthplace of guitarist Link Wray and General William C. Lee, often called the father of the American Airborne, whose home is now a museum downtown.

That railroad heritage means Dunn has one of the largest collections of early-1900s commercial buildings in Harnett County, still standing downtown and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Older buildings and older residential streets mean older pipes, plain and simple. Homes built in that early-to-mid-20th-century wave are exactly the ones we get called to most for drain and sewer issues, since decades of ground shift and root growth take a toll on original plumbing lines.

Dunn sits right off I-95 now, which has pulled a lot of new growth to the edges of town, and that growth brings a different set of plumbing needs.
